Notes
(1) If Pandalus are retained on board, either a sorting grid or 70mm SMP must be used.
(2) Does not apply if catch has 85% Queen Scallop, or 40% Sole and no more than 5% Cod
(3) Must have 90mm SMP or at least 70% Target species for 80-99mm nets and <5%cod
(4) Mesh size range 70-79mm banned
(5) Separator trawl, at least twice cod-end and less than 70mm or sorting grid, spaces less than 20mm
must be fitted*
(6) If Note 5 not used, then where sea fish have been caught less than 60% Shrimp/Common Prawn
(Crangon / Pandalus) on board*
*Does not apply if aggregate beam length is 8m or less; or a net headline of 8m or less
(7) Does not apply to beam trawl, refer to 3a below

BEAM TRAWLING

Vessels shall be prohibited from using any beam trawl inside 12 miles unless:
(1a) a vessel which entered into service before 1st January 1987 and whose engine power does not
exceed 221 kW and in the case of derated engines did not exceed 300kW before derating
(1b) a vessel which entered in to service after 31st December 1986 whose engine power is not derated ,
whose engine power does not exceed 221 kW and whos length overall does not exceed 24 metres
(1c) a vessel which had its engine replaced after 31st December 1986 with an engine which is not derated
and whose power does not exceed 221 kW
(2) the aggregate beam length does not exceed 9m unless operating with gear having a mesh size
between 16 and 31mm
(3a) on trawls with a mesh size of 80mm or greater, the entire upper half of the anterior part of such a net
consists of a panel of netting of which no individual mesh is of mesh size less than 180mm attached
directly to the headline or to no more than three rows of any mesh size attached directly to the headline.
(3b) the panel of netting shall extend towards the posterior of the net for at least the number of meshes
determined by:
(i) dividing the length in metres of the beam of the net by 12;
(ii) multiplying the result obtained in (i) by 5400 and
(iii) divididing the result obtained in (ii) by the mesh size in mm of the smallest mesh in the panel and
(iv) ignoring any decimal or other fractions in the result obtained in (iii).
(4) no more than two mesh size ranges from 32 to 99mm, 100-119mm and equal or greater than 120mm
are carried onboard simultaneously.
(5) whenever more than one net is towed simultaneously, each net shall be of the same mesh size range.
