The
Wash and North Norfolk coast are special. They
are:
In recognition of its important wildlife the Wash and North Norfolk coast has been designated a European marine site under the UK Habitats Regulations. This designation helps protect the biodiversity that makes this area so special by placing new and stronger responsibilities on public authorities and agencies to work closely together to safeguard the nature conservation interest of this outstanding site, in balance with the needs of its many users.

European marine site Conservation Objectives
(updated 24/06/08)
Introduction Conservation objectives define the desired state of each site in terms of the features for which they have been designated. When these features are being managed in a way which maintains their nature conservation value, then they are said to be in ‘favourable condition’. Conservation objectives are accompanied by one or more habitat extent and quality definition (or ‘attribute’) for each interest feature of the site. Targets are set for each attribute and condition monitoring measures whether the targets are being met. For The Wash & North Norfolk Coast European site interest features these attributes are set out in the Favourable Condition Table of the Regulation 33 package published in 2000. Attributes are subject to periodic reassessment and may be updated to reflect new information or knowledge; they will be used by Natural England and other relevant authorities to determine if a site is in favourable condition. The standards for favourable condition have been developed and are applied throughout the UK. The documents presented here update the favourable condition tables in the Regulation 33 advice package which did not include site-specific targets for each interest feature. In most cases there is now a measurable value against which the potential impact from an activity may be quantified. As such, they now provide a clearer, more quantifiable description of what Natural England considers the site to look like when in favourable condition and what standard it should be maintained at.
